What Is Keyword Density & How to Calculate It for SEO
Understand keyword density formula, keyword frequency and natural topic coverage, and how to avoid unnecessary keyword repetition.
Keyword Density is the percentage of times a target keyword or phrase appears within a text compared to the total word count of the document.
The Keyword Density Formula
Keyword Density (%) = (Keyword Count / Total Words in Document) × 100
For example, if your primary keyword appears 15 times in a 1,000-word blog post, your keyword density is: (15 / 1000) × 100 = 1.5%.
What Is the Ideal Keyword Density?
Modern SEO best practices recommend a primary keyword density of 1% to 2.5%. Exceeding 3% to 4% risks triggering Google algorithm filters for keyword stuffing and over-optimization.
